THE STORY OF SHANTI FROM INDIA
1. Shanti lives in Assam, India with her brothers and sisters. Her dad drives a truck and is away from home. Her mother picks tea. They are very poor.
2. Shanti stays at home. She looks after her sisters. Her brother goes to school. Shanti wishes she could read stories to her sisters.
3. Sister Nirmala comes to the village. Shanti invites Sister to stay in their home. Sister talks to Shanti's mum about school and says she can help.
4. Alma has just left school. She lives in the village and works with children. Alma looks after Shanti's little sisters so that Shanti can go to school.
5. Shanti goes to stay at the Children Helping Children hostel. The other girls welcome her. They have a party with tea and buns. Shanti goes to the Children Helping Children school and learns to read.
6. Now Shanti has a dream. She wants to teach other children how to read. All those supporting Children Helping Children can make her dream and the dreams of many others come true.
