MISSION SUNDAY 2021

24 October 2021 @ 8:00 am 5:00 pm

ARRUPE CENTRE – CAMBODIA

From 1975 to 1979, Cambodia went through great suffering due to the civil war. Millions of landmines were planted in Cambodia to explode when stepped on. It is still estimated that there are over 3 million landmines and other weapons buried across the country and are now counted more than 25,000 amputees recorded in Cambodia.

In the Mission Month of October, where the Church celebrates the valuable mission work and calls to raise awareness to help the most marginalised communities, Pope Francis reminds us that once we experience the power of God’s love and recognise his fatherly presence in our personal and community life:

“For we cannot keep from speaking about we we have seen and heard”

Acts 4:20

Chen’s Story of Hope at Arrupe Centre

Arrupe Centre in Cambodia support children who have been disabled through landmines or diseases such as polio and cancer.

Due to stepping on a landmine, Chen lost both his legs. Apart from the difficulty to accept his loss of mobility, Chen experienced both physical and mental limitations, and became burden to his family who were already struggling financially.

With very little money in the family, Chen’s parents embraced the opportunity that the Arrupe Centre offered; ensuring that their children received a quality education, and the chance to learn to live independently with their disabilities.

“I have a change to continue my studies and work as well. I feel like I have a new life!” Chen.

Chen now studies IT programming at University and inspires other disabled children at the centre to do the same as in the same way that he found support and love, he is now giving support himself to other fellow residents.

Chen is being given another chance thanks to the Arrupe Centre and to Missio who help this centre thanks to the donations and the generous hearts of the Maltese and Gozitans.

MISSION MONTH CONTRIBUTION TO ARRUPE CENTRE

Bishop Kike at Arrupe Centre

Missionary Day will be celebrated on Sunday 24 October 2021.

October is Mission Month around the world where the Church commemorates the invaluable work in missions and calls for to raise awareness of poor countries and their needs. In addition, every donation collected on missionary day goes to the needs of Arrupe Centre in Cambodia.

The Mission Month message of this year is:

“We cannot but speak about what we have seen and heard”. (Acts 4:20)

The good things we have received in life, we ought to share them with those less fortunate. Without your support the centre cannot continue its mission to care for these people in Cambodia.

You can help Bishop Kike and the Arrupe Centre by making your donation during this missionary month:

• Through our website by donating on the donation button on the right hand side,

• In the envelope you receive at home,

• As well as in churches.

Thanks to the Arrupe Centre and YOUR support, their futures are being shaped with a sense of hope!
