What Happens to your WMS Donation ?

Agħfas hawn għall verżjoni bil-Malti

The Parish Priest, with the help of the person in charge, collects the envelopes and counts the money therein. In many parishes a substantial sum is collected. Every Parish Church offers the donations collected during the Masses as well as that collected in the envelopes from the families.

Once Mission Sunday is over, the money is sent to the Missions at 7, Merchants’ Street, Valletta where it is placed in a special fund. At the beginning  of the year, when by then all collections have been received, the Director reports  the total sum to the Office in Rome.

During the month of May the Directors of the Pontifical Missionary Societies from all countries meet in Rome to decide how the money collected from all the Dioceses is going to be distributed.  Help is given to:

1. ordinary subsidy that means that every Bishop in the Missionary countries receives a sum ( of about 10,000 dollars) to strengthen his work;
2. extraordinary subsidy by which fulfillment of building projects of churches, clinics, schools seminaries can be made possible or for pastoral  projects (ex. Formation of Cathechists) or to give food and medicine or any other help.

In July, every Missionary Office in the respective countries receives a list of places where the money collected has to be sent. The Director sends the funds straight to the country.

So your donation can be of help to Cathechists who gather children and teach them, or to some nuns who direct a school or a clinic, sometimes money is given to a priest for the purchase of a motor cycle or a car to help him with his travellings. What you enclose in the envelope might finish in a faraway country like Sri Lanka or Pakistan  or in any other place in Africa.

Perhaps the loveliest thing in this exercise of sharing is its universal aspect: Catholics in all countries give…Catholics in all missionary countries received their share.

This was the last command that Jesus gave: ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…’ Mt.28:19
